10th June
We are finally back in civilisation and have internet again, so I can update the blog.
I think we were at Undara at the Lava Tubes last post, so I will carry on from there.
There was water in some of the tubes which made for nice reflections.
Helen had her first crack at driving the rig on the way out of Undara and did a pretty good job of it. She carried on until we came to the next bit of the highway!
It goes from a 2 lane sealed highway to this one waay track. And just to prove Murphys alive and well in the outback, you always meet these guys on the narrowest part. They dont want to move onto the soft stuff at the edge of the road, so you just give way to them.
We didnt get many on the Savannah way luckily, as it doesnt seem to be a major highway. These are only 3 trailers long here but around Mt Isa they are 4 trailer rigs.
We carried on to the Gilbert River where we decided it was time to stop for the night. This is a free camp and had a few vans there when we arrived.
The river was quite big but not a lot of water in it. We went for a walk along the bankt but were aware we are now in Croc country, so didnt go paddling in the water.
We had a nice quiet night then headed West again until we got to Leicharts Lagoon.
This is a Bush camp on a cattle station, thats open to the public and for $10.00 a night, you get hot showers,Toilets and spectacular Sunsets. After a week it drops to $6.00 a night.
As we were there over the weekend, we did the dinner over at the Homestead on Sat night.
$5.00 a head for a 3 course meal. Soup, roast and a treacle pudding for desert and some entertainment.
There were about 80 people there from the camp and if anyone came into the camping ground after 6.00pm, they would have thought the Aliens had taken everyone away. There was no one at the caravans, they were all over at the homestead.
I mentioned the Sunsets, they didnt dissapoint.
It bathed the camp in a nice soft glow. Showers and Toilets in the background. I told you it was a real bush camp. They want us to come back next year and manage it!! Not sure about that, it would be fun,but its too far away from anything.
Well thats enough for now, until next time.
Cheers Dave and Helen.
