20th Sept
On from the free camp to Port Samson towards the Coast from Roebourne.
A nice spot on a small Peninsular with Point Lambert at its tip. This is where the Rio Tinto Iron Ore loading port is. The camp was once again a nice spot but not cheap.
There is a lot of history around the area and a little village called Cossack, now abandoned was the place to see. The Information centre at Roebuck ran a bus trip for $20.00 a head which lasted for 5 hours, great value. We didn't realise how good it was until they took us through the loading facility at the Point. When I say through it I mean right through it.
This is the long Wharf that goes out to the Ships being loaded. There is a very long conveyor belt going out to the ships with the ore on it that gets dumped into the holds. They load 2 ships at a time. A new wharf is being built to double the capacity of the Port.
There is still plenty of money being spent in this area on the mining boom. I have never seen so many White with a green stripe down the side Utes getting around. All mining all with different numbers on the side. The trains up this way are quite large,on average 1.5 to 2 km long.
They were unloaded 2 wagons at a time in this machine.
Cossack next time.
Cheers Dave and Helen
